Village vs Town
Theme: ‘Love, Peace, Unity and Prosperity’
Taking Town to Village: The notion of taking a town to a village is a colonial concept designed to dismantle traditional, social and cultural settings, language, art and heritage. United Nations considered such vandalism and replacement of community values as ‘Cultural Genocide’ in 2007 Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Since 2009, Chollo kingdom in South Sudan become a dysfunctional community as result of ongoing ethnic cleansing in South Sudan.
Taking Village to Town: This is the best concept or vision. Village means people, cooperative, collaborative and caring. It means responsibility and protection of people and land. The members of JAJ seek to revitalize or resurrect destroyed systems and values and incorporate them into a modern governing system instead of individuals coming from town to disable village values and tradition.
Leadership Quality of African National Congress Hybridization of African and Western cultures and values work very well in South Africa because some of the leaders blinded westernized and South African values. Albert John Luthuli was a tribal chieftain until he was removed from his office by the Apartheid government in 1953. He became a teacher and leader of African National Congress (ANC). He was known for his active role in nonviolent campaigns to defy Apartheid discriminatory laws. He was the first black African and the first person from outside Europe and the Americas, to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960. Nelson Mandela also grew up in the community of tribal elders and chiefs, in which he had learned the richness and sense of African autonomous governing. Desmond Tutuwas the general secretary of the South African Council of Churches and spokesperson for the rights of black South Africans. Both Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. These figures carried with them their cultural and traditional values to build the towns of the modern world. They knew very well that God gives everyone or nation a gift to serve the best interest of the community. When the Pentecost came, Holy Spirit was given to the Apostles who were from all over the world in Jerusalem. Each Apostle received the gift of Holy Spirit in his own language and all were commanded to go and teach their own people about God. We understand here that the gift was not given to European Apostles, but to all nations. Likewise, our values and systems are gifts from which must be protected, developed and shared with others as (ANC):mechanism to overcome our daily challenges.
